Whether you are just looking for a comfortable pair of pants, or a step back into the 1980s when Camo and army pants first became a fashion statement. Cool army pants are the best. I remember back when I was a young teenager and army gear was a new line of clothing that was popular with the boys. Of course me being a Tomboy, couldn’t wait to get my hands on an on it.
I was always that kid that was not like all the other girls. Because I was a tad unique, that definitely lead me to dress completely different than the rest of the girls I knew. Once I found Camo and army gear, I was in love. I just couldn’t wait to get my first pair of army pants and of course a cool green tee shirt to complete the outfit.
The second I put them on, I was in love. There was no turning back for me.

Love of army gear
My love of army gear, has never wavered no matter what age I am. Whether it is Camo or all green, I always found army pants to be versatile, comfortable and the ultimate durable pants.
Like all things in the 80s, that fad didn’t last, and just like that it wasn’t considered fashionable to wear army gear anymore. Well that maybe the case for most people, but I didn’t get that memo.
Yes because they were no longer considered the proper fashion statement, they became much harder to find and they were no longer at stores in the mall.
Like anything, we love, sometimes we just don’t want to follow the fashion trends like everyone else. That is me and my army pants. I have always felt that I really don’t care whether they were deemed out of fashion or not.
Today I am almost 50 years old now, and I still have a huge love of army pants. All you need to do is take a peek inside my closet and you will see my favourite pants there.
Styles and designs
When it comes to style choices and designs, the sky is the limit. Whether you want girls army pants, or boys army pants, you can choose which ever one you want.
They come in an array of looks from:
- Shiny wind pants
- Traditional cargo pants
- Suspender pants
- Lined pants
Once you pick the style that you want, then you can decide on the color or colors to choose from. They come in Army Green obviously, Green Camo, Black, Beige, Olive, Brown Camo and so on. They really come in almost any color you can think of. Just because you buy them in a color other than Army Green, doesn’t make them “NOT” Army pants.
Many of the pants, especially the wind pants, have a drawstring at the bottom, that allow you to shorten them up or just tighten them to keep your legs warm.
An army pant is something that allows a person to use their fashion as a way to express themselves. I always get a very cool feeling when I wear them, that almost makes me feel like I can do anything. I know it sounds FUNNY, but I am just being honest, no matter how HOKEY that sounds!
Where to wear them
The best thing about army pants, is their durability and versatility. Let’s also not forget how COOL they truly are! You can pretty much wear them anywhere.
I love to wear mine outdoors, like camping, traveling or anywhere that I want to be absolutely comfortable. The other very cool thing, is they don’t wrinkle. Well none of the ones I have had do anyway.
I have even wore them to do manual labour tasks, as they can keep you cool. Some even have a double knee that allows for extra strength when kneeling down or an extra layer of fabric sewn into the butt area. All meant to make them as durable as possible.
They don’t get dirty easy, and if they do, then you just take a wet rag and wipe it off. If you get them super dirty, they do wash very well on cold in the washing maching and them hang them to dry.
Along with how easy they are to clean, they are also made of quite thick material which makes it hard to tear or rip them. It really makes sense, if we think about the name “ARMY PANTS” they were originally made for people in the Army. As we know, they tackle the worst of conditions and truly put the pants to the test.
Even though you maybe not be in the army, their durability makes them a pair of pants that when used in everyday life, will last a very long time. I love them so much, I have multiple pairs in different colors and sizes that I can choose between. Sometimes you may want a baggy pair, while the next time you want a more fitted kind. I have even bought extra pairs and cut them off for long Capri’s or shorts.
Buying a pair that is lined, then they are great for winter outdoor events, like hunting, winter camping, cross-country skiing, and just a hike outside. That extra lining inside will keep you toasty!!
Where to buy
As I mentioned in the beginning of this post, army gear, was a very fashionable line of clothing in the 80s. Once that fad changed, it took them out of the malls and clothing stores.
By the 90s, I was lucky enough to come across an army surplus store in Saskatoon where I live. That store is called “Quinn The Eskimo”. I know, great name hey!
This store was a Tomboy girls dream. They had all different styles and designs of army pants. Whatever I was looking for I could find there. Even offering used true army pants that were once worn by soldiers.
The funny thing about fashion trends, is that many of them seem to find a way to come back in style. It may take decades, but it happens.
It’s now 2020 and just like that ARMY PANTS ARE BACK! They are now considered stylish again and you will have no trouble finding some place to jump in and get your first pair.
They are so popular right now, that even online ETSY has an entire category dedicated to army pants. Why not browse through and see what your favourite army gear style is.
Are you Army ready
Whether you are looking for work or play, there is a set of cool army pants waiting for you. I know you may think I am not really into army gear. Well let me tell you, that the second that you put them on you will wonder why you waited so long.
With street wear now one of the most fashionable trends around, army gear fits right into that line of clothing. Just in the past year or so, this style of clothing sales are up 10 – 15%. With celebrities like Kanye West donning colored camo army pants, this trend is back and here to stay…..FOR A WHILE AT LEAST!
It really doesn’t matter to me what the fashion trends are, I will always be a person that enjoys wearing army pants. I did a post awhile ago on plaid shirts, and how over the decades they have continued to be popular. In my opinion army pants fit into that same category of clothes that will just always be there. Some things just never go out of style!
I hope I have peaked your interesting in trying on your own army pants. Let me know how it goes, I would love to hear your thoughts on this. Drop me a comment below.
